He Was Incredibly Skinny, Wasn’t The Best Dresser And Needed Braces

But he took my breath away, nonetheless. He decided to come to my church that morning to see me.  Thankfully, I was looking awfully adorable in my white flowery dress, white pantyhose, white flats and bit white hoop earrings. Exactly. I couldn’t even pay attention to the message because he was within inches of me.  I was certain he could see my heart thumping up and down that was literally beating out of my chest. Is he the one? He invited me to lunch that day with several other people.  I drove a few of us to our destination that day because clearly my 1990 Nissan Sentra was better than his 1977 turquoise Ford Mustang. It wasn’t love at first sight, but it was something at first sight. I knew it. He knew it. The people eating at the same table as us knew it. And the rest, as they say, is history. Do you remember your first date with your spouse?

  1. I was in college, studying music, and he was an oboist from the symphony. He needed a pianist for chamber music, so he had a date to talk to one of my friends at the cafe in our music school. For some reason, exactly that afternoon I felt that I needed cinammon candy to bear with one of my classes, and there he was, talking to her, and hearing the news that she would not have the time to rehearse with him. She saw me, called me, introduced me to him. The rest is history.

  2. We had been friends for a long time…then one day…he asked me out. WHAT? We were going to college together at OCC in Joplin. He took me to Club 609…very nice for a college budget. As we drove home that night….we both agreed we were not looking for anything serious…that was October…we were engaged in Feb…married in June. Yeah…that’s been 17 years ago this June…I guess we were looking for something serious after all. 🙂

  3. I will NEVER forget our first date. Nothing to special about it other than, we were in college and he was out of scholarship money, his friends knowing that he liked me gave him some money so he could take me out. I didn’t find this out till several months into our relationship! God blessed him with amazing friends.

  4. Funny you should mention that. 3 days ago marked the first time that Paul and I met online, and our first “dates” were scheduled online chats that he would set up.

I DO remember the first time we ended a chat without him scheduling the next one. BOY was I worried. I thought this online thing had run its course. I got an email within minutes asking for another “date”. That’s when I knew I had him hooked. 😉

  5. My friend Shelli wanted to introduce me to a funny guy who greeted at the Day 3 gig at Life Church. As fate would have it I ran into him afterward before she even had a chance to show me who she was talking about. He was slurping a Dr. Pepper and talking too fast. 3 days later we went to Starbucks and he prayed over our coffee, “let the fat pass through and the nutrients remain.” 3 months later I was Mrs. Maguire! P.S.(Marriage counselors do not advise only dating for 3 months) : )

  6. Lunch at the dormitory cafeteria of the U of W, Seattle. We walked through the buffet line picking out stuff to eat. He was quite a tall skinny character. He pointed out to me who the people were that he knew. Then we went for a walk on the pathways of the dormitory grounds. This was quite pretty because it was Spring and the greenery was in full bloom. When he reached for my hand my heart leaped almost jumping out of my chest pounding. His hands are BIG, long fingers. Mine not so much. His hand enveloped mine. I loved the warmth that held me. We still hold hands today even after 12 yrs. I still love that warmth that envelopes me.

  7. I was a sophomore and Mike was a junior at OBU. We met through my roommate, and for our first date, we drove into Oklahoma City to fly a kite at Lake Hefner then go out to eat. We went to Wal Mart to buy our kite, but they didn’t have any, so we just went to the lake and sat by the water and talked. A lot. Then Mike took me by his grandmother’s house and introduced me. Finally we went to Chili’s and talked some more. I’m glad that 14 years later we still haven’t run out of things to talk about! 🙂

PS. My first car was a 1990 Nissan Sentra. It was a box on wheels, but it was pretty faithful to me!

  8. I remember it was two was before we actually got together! We went on a date and decided to get together two yrs later. God had us meet way before we became an item.

  9. @chrisdbeall – that is funny.

our first date was….not really a date, ahem. but he wined and dined me in the ATL on our second date. and we he flew me to hilton head, sc for dinner and a walk on the beach on our third date? well, let’s just say i was DONE.

  10. He made me breakfast for dinner at his house and we sat and joked while listening to Air Supply. Two teachers on a tight budget. ha,ha!

  11. My first date with my hubby was a lunch date. He took me to a nice little Italian restaurant. I remember silently praying that I wouldn’t spill food on myself. (I am clumsy especially when I am nervous.) We then went back to my parents house and met up with my mom, and the three of us went to see a movie. Yes, I know it is very funny that my mother invited herself in on my first date with my hubby, but he was a very good sport about it. 🙂

  12. Love this:) My hubby could fit a similar description:) skinny, looked like he was 12, and didn’t dress well at all… but there was something 🙂 Our first date was over skype!!! {if that counts!} He is from South Africa!!! My heart was beating out of my chest and I was blushing!!!
